2 mistakes to avoid when charged with a felony in Maryland
Being charged with a crime – any crime – is a big deal. Even if you are not convicted, the idea that your reputation and freedom are at stake can be very overwhelming. If you are charged with a crime, it is in your best interests that you know what to do, and the missteps to avoid during the trial period.
The steps you take after you are charged with a crime can greatly impact the outcome of your case. Here are two crucial mistakes you need to steer clear of when facing felony charges in Maryland.
Violating your bail terms
Depending on the nature of your felony charge, you will likely be released on bail. It is important to understand that this is NOT an acquittal. Bail comes with its set of conditions. Some of these might include following the stipulations of the restraining order if you are facing domestic violence charges, showing up for your trial, avoiding discussing the matter on social media and avoiding out-of-state travel while the matter is still with the court. It is extremely important that you understand and obey your bail terms. Any violation might result in the revocation of your bail.
Getting in trouble with the law
One of the worst mistakes you can make when charged with a felony (and especially if you are out on bail) is getting in further trouble with the law. Another arrest might not only mean having fresh charges to contend with. It might also impact the outcome of your original charge. For instance, if you are charged with drunk driving, make every effort to avoid another DUI. This is particularly important if your license is suspended (for which you should not be driving in the first place) or if you have been granted a special license.
If you are charged with a felony, you need to understand your legal options so you can figure out how to avoid costly mistakes and defend yourself as effectively as you possibly can.
